Specialities

Theatre Upstairs is an independent theatre, a home for new plays and a nationally renowned company dedicated to the support of rising talent.

Theatre Upstairs is a boutique 40 seat theatre in the heart of Dublin City, located above Lanigan’s Bar, Eden Quay. The space is perfect for an afternoon or evening out, as there is a beautiful gallery space adjacent to the theatre with a large bay window overlooking the River Liffey where light lunch is served before daytime performances.

Theatre Upstairs stages both lunchtime (@ 1pm) and evening (@ 7pm) performances and all tickets cost €10. There is light lunch, which consists of homemade vegetable soup and fresh brown bread included in the ticket price for 1pm performances, served in the gallery space before the show. In the evening time, why not give yourself time for a drink before or after the show, as Theatre Upstairs is located above Dublin’s theatrical watering hole, Lanigan’s Bar.

History

Established in 2012.

Theatre Upstairs was originally located above The Plough on Abbey Street Lower and established in 2009, gaining two Irish Times Theatre Award nominations (Best New Play, Judges’s Special Award) in its first year before The Plough itself closed and so too did, Theatre Upstairs.

After an eventful history within The Plough, Theatre Upstairs relaunched on July 4th, 2012 above Lanigan’s Bar on Eden Quay. Since its relocation, Theatre Upstairs has housed and produced several groundbreaking premieres, which have gone on to tour nationally as well as transfer to other theatres, earning its reputation as Dublin’s theatrical seedbed. In February 2013 Artistic Director, Karl Shiels won the Judges’ Special Award at the Irish Times Theatre Awards for his work with Theatre Upstairs, for the development and promotion of new talent in Irish Theatre.

Theatre Upstairs continues to seek out the best new plays and premiere the artistry of both established and emerging companies throughout Ireland.

Meet the Business Owner

Karl Shiels ..

Business Owner

Karl Shiels is a founding member of Theatre Upstairs and has been the Artistic Director of the company since its inception. As a freelance actor and director, he has worked extensively on stage and screen both nationally and internationally for almost two decades. Karl formed Theatre Upstairs out of a need to create an independent theatre where self producing artists could realise their innovative productions in a safe space, even with little or no funding. Karl has continued to lead the company as well as directing productions such as, The Little Match Girl by Katie McCann and Leper + Chip by Lee Coffey. With so many new and exhilarating voices emerging, he is proud of Theatre Upstairs’ role as a seedbed for rising talent, nurturing emerging companies from the page to the stage. Karl believes that the company is solidified by its trusted partnerships with established theatre practitioners who act both as collaborators within Theatre Upstairs and as mentors for promising young artists.
