A traditional family owned Irish pub with an emphasis on excellent customer service. We have twenty different draught beers on tap and we stock a wide range of quality craft beers. Through our craft beers we try to promote the new Irish breweries and we also try to find the most unusual and interesting beers for our customers to try.
Our Kitchenboyz restaurant makes everything fresh and serves sizzling steaks, delicious fish, mouthwatering burgers including the massive ‘Almighty Burger’ and unbelievably good chicken wings. We’ve been told by customers that we serve the best Chicken Wings in Dublin and we don’t disagree with them – the ‘Wingz’ are definitely one of our “must try” dishes.
History
Established in 1779.
The Old Punchbowl is a family run pub that been operating continuously at the same location since 1779. The building is shown as a landmark on many old maps. Standing on the main coast road linking Dublin to Wicklow, Wexford and Waterford it’s past patrons have included many famous and historical Irish men and women and legend has it that The Old Punchbowl was also used as a base of operations by several notorious highwaymen.
The Old Punchbowl’s name comes from a time when there were horse races run on Booterstown strand. A winning jockey would come to the pub and be given a drink from a solid silver punchbowl. The location of this prize is unfortunately lost to time. Also gone are the horse races – in 1803 the Lord Mayor of Dublin banned them, citing them a cause of “unruly behaviour”.
Interestingly since 1779 the pub has always held on to the same name – either The Punchbowl or The Lucky Punchbowl or it’s current version The Old Punchbowl – and long may it continue.
