An Exhibition of Rare Books in Farmleigh House

James Joyce (1882-1941) is one of the most influential writers of his era. His works have been the subject of worldwide scholarly scrutiny particularly the iconic work, Ulysses (1922). Although he spent the majority of his adult life abroad, Joyce’s works are meticulously rooted in the topography of Dublin and in the Phoenix Park area in particular. In Finnegans Wake, The Dead and The Painful Case, The Phoenix Park and Chapelizod are central locations, whilst Joyce makes numerous allusions to Phoenix Park in Ulysses. He explained he’s preoccupation with Dublin when he said “For myself I always write about Dublin, because if I can get to the heart of Dublin I can get to heart of all the cities of the world. In the particular is contained the universal”.
This exhibition is free to attend and can be viewed as part of the guided tour of Farmleigh House. Free OPW guided tours run 7 days a week from 10.15am-4.15pm.
